New Girl Wedding

For those of you that are unaware of my studio work, before devoting myself to special events, I created flowers for over 60 films and 20 television shows.
Just recently, I was asked to fill in to set up a wedding scene for the new sitcom, New Girl, starring  Zooey Deschanel as Jess Day.

She’s an offbeat and adorable girl in her late 20s who, after a bad breakup, moves in with three single guys. Goofy, positive, vulnerable and honest to a fault, Jess has faith in people, even when she shouldn’t. Although she’s dorky and awkward, she’s comfortable in her own skin. More prone to friendships with women, she’s not used to hanging with the boys – especially at home.

Creating flowers for TV and film is challenging as you are asked to create flowers to back up the set and character of the story. Many times this is in conflict of what you would do for a private client.

I would tell you what the episode is about but, it is not uncommon for us not to know.

There have been many times while watching TV that I suddenly notice a floral arrangement that I have created.

Surprise Anniversary Brunch

On a  recent Sunday we helped plan a surprise anniversary brunch for some special clients. While we waited in the cul-de-sac, nearby, the anniversary couple was lured out of their house by a daughter with a promise of a unique brunch location. As soon as they were on their way, we took over their garden to create this unique space

We erected a black and white stripe canopy over the round garden table,  brought in beautiful linens and striking flowers. We used Crystal Blush miniature calla lilies, Millet, Queen Ann’s Lace, Dusty Miller, and Echavarrias.

We then scattered a circle of rose petals around the canopy and down the path.

I wish I could have seen the joy and surprise on their faces when twenty minutes later they returned to their home and special brunch.

Diane and Michael Wedding at Saddlerock Ranch and Vineyards

The Chateau Dome is a lovely venue for this intimate smaller wedding Perched on the top of a hill surrounded by vineyards of wine grapes and Iceberg roses, you feel like you are in the Tuscan wine country.

We draped  thick natural woven fabric over the Dome’ s gazebo. Then we wove hand-made garlands of Grevillea, Liquidambar, St. John’s Wort, Oregonia, and rose hips. We then tied nosegays of Safflower, rose hips, roses, Celosia, bronze Fuji and Statesman button mums throughout the garlands.

The brides best friend collected vintage canning jars which we  filled with Dahlias, Teddy Bear sunflowers, spray roses, garden roses, hydrangea, Billy Balls, and other garden flowers.

Using long wood and round tables covered with dark orange spice colored linens we arranged the jars down the center.

Amber glass votive candles were tied with moss, lichens, Grevillea leaves and custom dyed ribbon.

Wild forest mushrooms seemed to grow up from the base of the candles.

The cake topper, or should I say, “sider” was in tribute to the bride and groom being avid mountain hikers.

Birthday Party at Villetta

For those of you that haven’t been to the Santa Monica /Brentwood area lately, Chez Mimi is no more.
Villetta is the latest reincarnation, with a southern Italian cusine.  It has a fresh new look and I love the central courtyard and back private room areas.

We collected Dinner-plate Dahlias, Blushing Bride Protea and Creme de la Creme Roses to create this bright and summery table.
